About Vinings
Vining is a
census
designated place
and
unincorporated
city of Cobb
County, Georgia,
just across the
Chattahoochee
River from
Atlanta. From
the 2000 census,
the city's total
population was
the 9677th U.S.
postal service
uses "Atlanta"
Vining all
addresses, even
though the "Vining"
is still
acceptable. The
Weather Channel
and Home Depot
is located at
Vining.
At the
beginning,
Vining was a
resort for those
living in the
city. Land,
10,000 acres, or
about 40km sq
was owned by
Hardy Pace, who
helped to
establish
Atlanta. He
acted as Pace's
Ferry across the
Chattahoochee
River, in the
region in
Atlanta,
Buckhead, and
Smyrna, and the
speed of Ferry
Road is still
primarily an
east-west road
through town. In
1884, he was
buried in a
small family
cemetery atop
Vining Mountain,
now called Mount
Wilkinson.
Town was first
named
Crossroads, and
then speed. In
1904, the final
name change was
in honor of an
engineer who
helped create
the Western and
Atlantic
Railroad through
the lanes around
the city, which
was also the
depot. These
tracks, which
are also carried
out Marietta and
Kennesaw are now
run by CSX. The
Vining Historic
Preservation
Society is
trying to keep
alive the
history of the
city.
